What is a tummy tuck?
Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, is a cosmetic operation in which excess fat and skin are removed from the abdomen in order to tighten the tummy area. Abdominoplasty is often performed when loose skin has developed after dramatic weight loss or pregnancy.
Tummy tuck recovery and aftercare
Your recovery process will vary based on several factors, from your age and fitness to the level of muscle contouring you opt for. You must follow any guidance from your surgeon to make your recovery as easy as possible.
One hour after tummy tuck surgery
During the hours after surgery, it is important to get up and move around to prevent the formation of blood clots. During your recovery, you may struggle to stand fully upright but this will ease over time. Your surgeon will likely insert drainage tubes, allowing fluid to drain from the incision area.
You will also be provided with antibiotics to prevent infection, and in some cases, anticoagulants to prevent blood clotting. Pain medication will be provided to make your recovery easier.
One week after tummy tuck surgery
For the first few days of recovery, you should have somebody with you who can assist with everyday tasks until your mobility increases. You will be given a binder which should be worn for up to six weeks after your surgery. This will reduce fluid build-up and support your muscles.
Two weeks after tummy tuck surgery
After two weeks you should begin to feel better. You may now begin doing minimal exercises, such as walking or leg exercises – jumping and abdominal exercise should be avoided for now. Depending on your job, you may be able to return to work.
Six weeks after tummy tuck surgery
You will now begin to see the results of your surgery and should be feeling almost back to normal. However, there may be some mild swelling for up to three months post-surgery. You should also allow between six months and a year for your scar to heal completely.
Getting a tummy tuck can be a great way to achieve your desired look but remember to listen to your body as you recover. The recovery period will be different for everybody so it is important to do what feels right for you.
