What is wrinkle relaxing treatment treatment?

Wrinkle relaxing treatments usually use an injection of botulinum toxin type A. Botulinum toxin, commercially known as Botox, is injected into the muscles of the face in order to relax them. This can have the effect of softening facial expressions and reversing signs of ageing such as wrinkles. It all adds up to a more youthful appearance.

It is important to note that wrinkle relaxing treatments such as Botox injections are effective on expressive, rather than static lines. Expressive lines are those which appear when your face moves.

Am I a good candidate for wrinkle relaxing treatment?

Wrinkle relaxing treatments are suitable for those who favour a non-surgical, non-permanent solution for addressing their wrinkles. It is a safe and simple option with minimal risk and can be less expensive than surgical treatments. Those opting for the treatment should have realistic objectives in terms of what the procedure can achieve.

During the surgery

Numbing cream can sometimes be used before the administration of the wrinkle relaxing Botox injection. The injection is performed using a very fine needle with very small amounts of botulinum toxin type A and targets the muscles beneath the skin. The toxin temporarily blocks the nerve signal to the muscle, preventing it from contracting. This subsequently makes the overlying wrinkles less visible.

The safety of wrinkle relaxing treatments are well established, and they are used by millions of people all over the globe. The injection itself is almost painless, although a mild stinging sensation may be felt. The needles are small, meaning the risk of bleeding or bruising is small.

In general, the treatment takes two to seven days to begin working, although it can take longer to see the full benefits. The time it takes for the effects to be seen will depend on the individual's response to the injection and the strength of their facial muscles. Results typically last between three to six months.

Recovery from wrinkle relaxing treatment

It is recommended that exercise is avoided for approximately six hours following the treatment. You should also avoid alcohol or hot baths, which can both increase blood flow and dilute the effect of the treatment. Touching the face, including actions such as applying make-up, should be avoided as this can alter the location of the product outside the targeted area. However, the activation of the treated muscles - by squinting or frowning, for example - can be recommended during the period immediately following the procedure, in order to enhance the effect of the treatment. A follow-up appointment is undertaken two weeks after the initial treatment, where a top-up injection may be required.
