How Long Does Liposuction Take?

Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the world. The purpose of liposuction is to remove unwanted fat from specific areas of the body. Your surgeon will perform liposuction by contouring and sculpting the chosen areas of the body to permanently remove fat cells. The result is a slimmer, smoother appearance.

How long does liposuction take?

Liposuction treatment can take anywhere between 1-3 hours. This is dependent on the area of the body that is being treated. Depending on the extent of the liposuction, it can be done as an outpatient procedure, which means it is possible to leave the clinic on the same day as your treatment – although clinicians recommend plenty of rest at home in the days following liposuction.

Most popular areas of the body for liposuction

Liposuction is most commonly performed on the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and hips. It is important to understand that there are limits to the amount of fat that can be removed during a single liposuction session (approximately five litres).

Post-liposuction recovery

After liposuction, you should refrain from undertaking any strenuous activities like going to the gym or running. If your job involves physical work (such as heavy lifting or labouring) you may wish to take some time off.

Despite heavy physical activity being off the cards, light exercise is recommended in the days following liposuction treatment. This helps to get the blood flowing and will assist in the draining of any anaesthetic fluid in the body.

The following activities may be resumed just 48 hours after liposuction:

  • Moderate household activities (such as cooking or cleaning)
  • Driving
  • Office work
  • Showering

Liposuction Recovery

While liposuction takes mere hours, complete recovery may take a couple of weeks. To ensure complete safety, it is advisable to avoid strenuous activity for the first few days after treatment. The wearing of a compression bandage is also advised.
