Types Of Liposuction Techniques

Liposuction, also known as body contouring, is a cosmetic procedure that involves removing fat from areas of the body where fat tends to accumulate such as the neck, arms, thighs, hips, tummy, and buttocks. This procedure is meant to improve the contours of your body and can have long-lasting results if it is accompanied by a healthy diet and lifestyle. If you are considering getting liposuction done, you should familiarise yourself with the different types of liposuction you should know about.

Types of liposuction

Suction assisted liposuction[SAL]

SAL is a traditional liposuction technique. It is carried out under local anaesthesia to get rid of fat in smaller areas such as the neck and chin. During the procedure, a cannula attached to a vacuum device is inserted into the area being treated and moved back and forth to break the fat deposits which are later suctioned out. This technique provides excellent results. Another benefit of SAL is that it has a lower risk of complications.

Wet liposuction

This technique uses a fluid containing a numbing agent, a blood vessel constrictor and a saline solution. The surgeon injects small volumes of the fluid into the body in intervals to gently dislodge the fat and then sucks out the fat using the fluid’s ingredients. The benefit of this liposuction technique is that bruising and swelling are minimal.

Laser-assisted liposuction

Laser-assisted liposuction uses heat energy from a laser to liquefy fat cells. The surgeon then vacuums the fat cells or drains them through a series of tubes. Laser-assisted liposuction is recommended for delicate areas with restricted access such as the face, chin, and neck. In addition to melting the fat, the laser energy also helps coagulate the blood vessels and tighten the skin by stimulating the regeneration of collagen in the treated area.

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction is similar to laser-assisted liposuction, but instead of laser energy, it uses ultrasound vibrations. During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision and inserts a low-frequency ultrasound device. The sound vibrations emulsify the fat which is later removed using a suction tube. This type of liposuction is recommended for fibrotic areas of the body such as the upper back and the male breast.
